NASHVILLE (AP) — A former police officer in Tennessee is facing charges that he was paid at least $8,473 in overtime for hours he did not work.
Knoxville Police officer Joshua Robert Smith was indicted by a Knox County grand jury last week with theft over $2,500, forgery and official misconduct, according to a Tennessee comptroller’s investigation.
Smith admitted to requesting the false overtime to help pay medical bills from February 2017 to February 2019, the report said. He resigned in May 2019.
Smith did not have permission to work away from his assigned work location at the police department building, investigators alleged.
The police department said they have corrected or will correct deficiencies with oversight of overtime requests, the comptroller’s office said.
