Cyclone boys slide past Vikings by one stroke on links

The Elizabethton boys’ golf team couldn’t have made it any closer than it was on Monday afternoon when the Cyclones narrowly defeated the visiting Tennesee High Viking golf team by the slimmest of margins with a one-stroke victory, 157-158.
The trio of Carson Peters, Caleb Tipton, and Padraig Murphy each shot a round of 39 while Cooper Tipton’s 40 helped to give the edge the team needed to pull out the thriller.
Other Cyclone golfers taking to the Elizabethton Golf Course included Brayden Phillips (46), Kerry Williams (46), Chase Buck 48, and Jacob Williams (50).
Jack Tickle of Tennessee High took the boys medalist with a nine-hole total of 37. Teammate Evan Jones finished with a 38 and Micah Jones chipped in with a 39.
Alex Jones 44 helped to make up the Vikings team score on the day.
Sullivan East finished the day in third place as the Patriots finished with a team-total 185.
The Patriots were led by Matt Durham who carded a nine-hole finish of 43 while Shay Sherfey (44), and Justice Dillard followed with a 46. Jake Kyte and Tyson Mithell both finished with a 52.
Unicoi County closed out the afternoon in boys’ action with a 234 led by Caleb Peterson with a 54. Ethan Peterson shot a 58 as not other Blue Devil golfer broke under 60 for the round.
In girls’ action, Tennessee High won going away by recording a two-person team score of a 75. Noelia shot a remarkable even-par 36. Her teammate, Madylen Simcox, recorded a 39 to give the Lady Vikings the victory for the day.
Sullivan East finished in second play as the Lady Patriots shot a team score of 103. Tori Lenard led the way with a 51 and was followed by Evie Lenard with a 52 to make up the team score.
The Lady Cyclones finished in third place by a minuscule one stroke behind East recording a team-round of 104. Gabby Miller’s 51 was the best round showing on the cards as the golfers came in.
Kylee Evans finished with a 53 to give the Lady Cyclones their score.
Other Lady Cyclone finishers on the day included Hannah McDonnell (54), Katelyn Kechter (55), Ashlynn Guy (57), and Katelyn Lee (62).
Unicoi County finished up the four-team field in fourth by recording a 125 led by Kynzie Jones who completed the day with a 57. Lilly Hopson’s 62 made up the Lady Blue Devils scoring.
