JOHNSON CITY— The Center for Academic Achievement at East Tennessee State University has earned International Tutor Training Program Certification (ITTPC) from the College Reading and Learning Association (CRLA).
The Center for Academic Achievement (CFAA) is home to Learning Services, which provides tutoring and supplemental instruction, and Testing Services for ETSU. The Learning Services division offers tutoring in many subjects, including writing and speaking, mathematics, natural sciences, general education courses and more.
“This certification is the gold standard for tutor preparation and development in colleges and universities across the country, and we are extremely proud of the years of work that went into designing the program and applying for certification,” said Dr. Deidre Johnson, director of Learning Services in the CFAA.
According to the CRLA website (www.crla.net), ITTPC provides recognition and positive reinforcement for tutors’ successful work from an international organization. It also sets an internationally accepted standard of skills and training for tutors.
To attain certification, tutoring centers must adhere to rigorous hiring, training and evaluation procedures. Certified programs are eligible to bestow internationally recognized certificates upon tutors as they complete training and tutoring requirements.
“This ensures that ETSU students receive the best possible assistance in the CFAA as tutors build their skills and résumés,” Johnson said.
Among the numerous benefits of this certification are the use of CRLA guidelines and other resources in the development of superior training programs; creating a spirit of teamwork in tutor training curriculum design and in tutor training and evaluation; securing greater student and faculty confidence and respect for the tutorial staff and program; attracting highly motivated tutors with CRLA Certification credentials and extensive training; and more.
ETSU is now one of more than 1,100 ITTPC-certified programs through CRLA throughout the world.
