For the second straight day, the Cyclones offense churned out runs in bunches in East Tennessee High School League play. The Cyclones (1-3-1) got seven hits and posted nine runs in a 9-3 win over the Raiders (2-4) at TVA Credit Union Ballpark on Tuesday in four innings.
Thunder, lightning, and rain interrupted the game in the bottom of the fourth with the Cyclones having plated four runs in the second consecutive frame with fans and players heading for shelter.
Catcher Zak Workman had a three-for-three day with a triple, two singles, and three runs batted in while shortstop Bryson Rollins was two-for-three with two RBIs.
EHS struck for a run in the first with Workman bashing a triple to centerfield with one away and Rollins plated him with a single up the middle.
The Raiders struck for three runs in the third with Brody Cloud striking a bases-loaded single to plate two runs.
A pair of walks then forced home the third run of the frame but Cyclones starting pitcher Wesley Shankles then retired David Howell on a fly ball to stop the bleeding.
Betsy struck right back with four runs as Workman and Rollins each had RBI hits following a single from Shankles and a free pass to Jaden Anderson for a 4-3 Cyclones lead. A wild pitch brought home a run and a ground ball RBI from Elijah Birdsong staked the Cyclones to a 5-3 advantage.
Cooper Tipton pitched a scoreless top of the fourth as ominous fog and rumbling thunder began to move in.
In the fourth, the wheels fell off the wagon defensively for Sullivan North as they committed four errors in the stanza – including three on one play – that saw Workman score all the way from first base on a series of bad throws.
Cade Russell reached on a one-out walk and Shankles reached on an infield error. Anderson then walked to load the bases before a wild pitch brought home a run and Workman’s third hit plated two more runs.
North pitcher Braden Wilhoit attempted to pick Workman off at first but his throw was errant allowing Workman to get to third base.
The Raiders first baseman attempted to throw Workman out at third but his throw went over his third baseman’s head as Workman now headed for home.
The last throw went over the head of the North catcher for the final run before the weather forced the issue and the game was called.
