As school rolls back around for another year, many kids look forward to participating in Elizabethton Schools Back-2-School Bash where they can pick up a backpack filled with school supplies, get a free haircut, and take advantage of inflatables and an obstacle course set up by the Elizabethton Police Department.
Families have also been able to speak with many support groups available to them in Elizabethton.
However, due to the COVID-19 pandemic which closed the 2019-2020 school year in March and continues to be a thorn in the flesh as this year’s Back-2-School Bash has been canceled due to social distancing state recommendations.
The school system is still committed to making sure each child has the school supplies they need upon their physical return to school for the 2020-2021 school year.
Plans are for the system to order backpacks to be filled with school supplies from a school supplier.
That is where citizens, businesses, and churches of the community are being called on for action as each backpack will average $16 each and the school system needs everyone’s help in making sure children have the items needed.
The past years have been a success due to partnerships that the school system had with local businesses, churches, and private donors and for this effort to be successful it will take the entire community banding together as many have suffered from the impact of the pandemic.
As many know, the Elizabethton community has always shown resilience when faced with tough and trying times and with many families experiencing hardships due to parents being laid off from their jobs, that makes this effort even more important.
Backpacks will be provided for students of all ages and with the ability to present students physically to school, the intent is to give a gift of confidence on their first day back with a brand new backpack filled with supplies.
For some, the supply-filled backpack will be the only hope of having what is needed to get off on the right foot.
