One final meeting… Gardenhour presides over last board meeting as Director of Schools

With the biggest agenda item being taken care of with the naming of Mr. Richard VanHuss as the new Director of Elizabethton City Schools, current Director of Schools, Dr. Corey Gardenhour, presided over his final school board meeting as the board turned to several pieces of business that needed to be addressed during their regular-scheduled June meeting.
After approving Board Chairwoman and legal counsel Debra Owens to negotiate a contract with VanHuss, the board approved several items that were on the agenda.
The board gave approval to the following items:
– Approved the Director of Schools to negotiate a contract with Reinhart Food Service of Johnson City for the 2020-2021 school year with the option to renew on a yearly basis for a time not to exceed three years starting July 1, 2020.
– Approved the renewal of bid No. 2018-2019-01-SN for bread and bakery products from Flowers Baking Company for the period July 1, 2020, through June 30, 2021.
– Approved the renewal of bid No. 2018-2019-02-SN for milk and ice cream products from Mayfield Dairy for the bid period July 1, 2020, through June 30, 2021.
– Approved the renewal of RFP 2019-2020-01 to receive lawn maintenance services by Jabez Complete Lawn Service for fiscal year July 1, 2020, through June 30, 2021.

– Approved the renewal of RFP 2019-2020-02 for pest control services with Chappell’s Pest Control for fiscal year July 1, 2020, through June 30, 2021.

– Approved the renewal of the Dual Enrollment Memorandum of Understanding between Elizabethton City Schools and Northeast State Community College for the 2020-2021 school year.
– Approved the purchase of thirty laptop computers from Dell Technologies in the amount of $787.39 each for a total of $23,621.70 for the Library Media Center to be used to create a more flexible learning space at Elizabethton High School.
– Approved the purchase of thirty Oculus Quest All-In-One VR Gaming Headsets from Lobaki, Inc. in the amount of $399 each for a total of $21,979.70 including a three-year warranty on each headset.
– Approved the State Contract purchase of 200 laptop computers and accessories from Dell Technologies for teacher use in the amount of $157,998 (utilizing Elementary and Secondary School Emergency Relief (ESSER) and XQ funds. State Contract purchase.

– Approved the State Contract purchase of 1500 Lenovo Chromebooks from CDW-G for student use in the amount of $300,000 (utilizing Elementary and Secondary School Emergency Relief (ESSER) and XQ funds. State Contract purchase.

– Approved the contract between Elizabethton City Schools and GoinsRashCain, Inc. as Construction Manager for the hardening of entrances at Elizabethton High School, Harold McCormick Elementary, and East Side Elementary not to exceed $285,000.
Dr. Gardenhour also encouraged the board to consider allowing GoinsRashCain to oversee the bathroom rebuild and roof replacement at T.A. Dugger Middle School as including all the projects, there will be five projects ongoing around approximately $1.4 million dollars.
– Approved the creation of one full-time Instructional Coordinator position at Elizabethton High School (pending budget approval from XQ).
Prior to the business portion of the meeting, Ms. Susan Peters addressed the board in time set aside for citizens to speak. Ms. Peters briefly looked back over the last five years and commended Dr. Gardenhour for his work for the system.
She also spoke to the importance and the weight the board had in continuing to move the school system forward.
At the end of the meeting, Booher presented Dr. Gardenhour with a token of appreciation for his work with the board.
The next regularly scheduled board meeting will be on Tuesday, July 21, 2020, at 6:30 pm in the Mack Pierce Board Room at the Board of Education Office.
