MEMPHIS (AP) — One child has died and three others were hospitalized in a house fire investigators say was caused by a child playing with candles inside the home in Memphis.
Memphis Fire Department firefighters found the girl’s body on a bedroom floor after controlling the blaze within 10 minutes of their arrival at the home early Monday morning, news outlets reported. Authorities did not reveal the age or name of the child, or if she was the one playing with the candles.
Two adults were transported to a hospital to be treated for anxiety, and another child was taken for observation. All are expected to recover, WREG reported.
Investigators are awaiting a Shelby County Medical Examiner’s report to determine what caused the girl’s death. They say the house did not have a smoke alarm that worked.
