Former Carter County Sheriff Chris Mathes was among graduates receiving degrees Saturday at East Tennessee State University’s virtual graduation.
Mathes earned a Master’s Degree in Criminal Justice and graduated cum laude and was a member of Alpha Phil Sigma. He graduated from Elizabethton High School in 1988 and obtained a Bachelor of Science Degree in Criminal Justice from ETSU in 1995.
Mathes served as Carter County Sheriff from 2006 to 2014 and previously served over 14 years as a Senior Special Agent with the U.S. Drug Enforcement Administration and as a police officer and criminal investigator with the Johnson City Police Department during the years 1992 to 2006.
For Mathes, this past December marks the beginning of a 28-year career in law enforcement service working at the federal, state, municipal and county level.
Chris is the son of life-long Carter County natives Willie and Nancy Mathes, and is the husband of Melissa Mathes. They have two children, C.J. Mathes, age 11, and Mia Mathes, age 4.
Chris Mathes’ younger brother, Tim Mathes, also continues to serve as a veteran Nashville Metro Firefighter and Paramedic.
