Local students honored at Milligan awards ceremony

MILLIGAN COLLEGE — Milligan College celebrated the end of the spring semester with a virtual Awards Convocation and Blessing Service on Thursday, April 30. The annual awards ceremony recognizes many of the college’s undergraduate students and celebrates their accomplishments. This year, Milligan combined the Awards Convocation with the college’s annual Blessing Service, a worship service that honors this year’s graduating class.
The faculty and administration announced over 80 awards and scholarships during the ceremony Thursday.
Bo Pless, of Elizabethton, received Milligan’s most distinguished student honor, the Ivor Jones Outstanding Senior Award.
Milligan’s faculty nominate the Ivor Jones Outstanding Senior Award recipient each year. The award is presented to a graduating senior who demonstrates outstanding performance in service to the college, potential for continuing the objectives of the college, academic excellence and participation in college life.
Pless, a mechanical engineering major, was a Jeanes Honors Scholar and a member of Milligan’s men’s basketball team. He also was honored as a co-recipient of the Mechanical Engineering Award.

In biblical learning, Gabi Brown, of Jonesborough, received the Earl R. Stuckenbruck Award for Excellence in Greek. Matthew Haagen, of Johnson City, earned the Fred and Esther Meding Honorary Award for Biblical Studies. Hannah Luzadder, of Johnson City, was awarded the Outstanding Promise in Christian Education Award. Reese Brackins, of Unicoi, received the W. Dennis Helsabeck/Stone-Campbell Journal Promising Scholar Award.
In computer science, Noah Mullen, of Mountain City, was awarded the Outstanding Student Scholarship Award; Jack Presnell, of Elizabethton, received the Computer Information Systems Award for Mobile; and Cody Mudrack, of Elizabethton, earned the Computer Science Award.
For the area of education, Gabrielle Mardis, of Johnson City, was honored with the Outstanding Student Scholarship Award. Meaghan Rodgers, of Johnson City, received the Paul Clark Teacher Education Award. Leah Moore, of Elizabethton, earned the Kappa Delta Pi Award. Jordan Goodwin Carter, of Kingsport, and Josie Milam, of Jonesborough, were co-recipients of the Undergraduate Student Teaching Award. Rebecca Foxx and Riley Prickett, both of Johnson City, earned the Intern Award for Elementary Education; William Carrier, of Kingsport, was awarded the Intern Award for Secondary Education; and Derek Jeffers, of Greeneville, received the Intern Award for K-12. Russell Bennett, of Erwin, and Louisa Gaudiano, of Kingsport, were co-recipients of the Education Area Research Award.
Ian Kelly, of Elizabethton, was recognized with the Outstanding Student Scholarship Award in Engineering. Bo Pless, of Elizabethton; Doc Maines, of Roan Mountain; and Sarah Robinson, of Elizabethton, received the Mechanical Engineering Award. Casey Williams, of Elizabethton, earned the Electrical Engineering Award.
Ryne Baines, of Elizabethton, received the Physical Education Award.
For the area of humane learning, Andrea Hyder, of Elizabethton, was awarded the Outstanding Student Scholarship Award. Morgan Glovier, of Bristol, Tenn., received the English Award; Dawson Jacobs, of Bluff City, earned the German Award; and Elizabeth Dotson, of Kingsport, was awarded the Humanities Award.
In the performing, visual and communicative arts, Chase McGlamery, of Mountain City, received the Outstanding Student Scholarship Award in Communication; Katie Cochran, of Johnson City, was awarded the Outstanding Student Scholarship Award in Music; and Amanda Lorch, of Johnson City, earned the Outstanding Student Scholarship Award in Performing and Visual Arts. Taylor Williams, of Afton, was the recipient of the Cinema Award and a co-recipient of the Fine Arts Award. Emma Albrecht, of Johnson City, earned the Communications Award. Amy Shumaker, of Bristol, Tenn., was a co-recipient of the Fine Arts Award and Graphic Design Award. Sydney Rhoton, of Jonesborough, also received the Graphic Design Award. Elizabeth Dykes Williams, of Johnson City, earned the Orchestra Award. Hannah Luzadder was awarded the Women’s Chorale Award, and Elijah Manship, of Fall Branch, was recognized with the WUMC Radio Student Leadership Award.
Eden Huhn, of Johnson City, earned the Outstanding Student Scholarship Award in Scientific Learning, and Hannah Rodgers, of Johnson City, received the Biology Award.
Ashlyn Jackson, of Kingsport, was presented the Psychology Award.
Sydney Rhoton also received the Guy and Rhea Oakes Scholarship through Milligan’s Advancement Office, and Elizabeth Dotson was awarded the Jeremy S. Duncan Memorial Scholarship.
The Institute for Servant Leadership presented Emma Albrecht the Servant Leadership Honor.
For research, the Outstanding Undergraduate Research Project Award was presented to Hannah Rodgers. The RISE Above Research Theme Awards were presented to Maggie Booher, of Elizabethton, and Amy Shumaker for humanities; The STEM Research Award was presented to Zula Coley, of Johnson City; Jay Wheeler, of Jonesborough; Randy Huerta, of Johnson City; John Cole, of Elizabethton; and Sarah Robinson.
The SGA Student Distinguished Service Award was presented to Teve Mushayamunda, of Johnson City.
Hannah Luzadder received the Student Development Leadership Award.
