With basketball for most high school teams around the region wrapping up, its time to move on to the spring sports – softball and baseball.
One softball team in the area, the Elizabethton Lady Cyclones, got things started at home Monday against the Grainger Lady Grizzlies.
The Lady Grizzlies started things off on a couple of good swings of the bat resulting in an early run for the visitors in the first. But soon after, the Lady Cyclones were able to record three quick outs to reduce the damage.
The Lady Cyclones came out in the home half with some hot bats of their own as an early single to centerfield by Kennedy Harris brought home Maggie Johnson for the RBI knotting the score at one after the first.
It was nothing doing in the second for both teams as the score remained tied up at one apiece.
Things were looking to be the same for the Lady Grizzlies in the third until Courtney Williams sent a shot over the left-field wall to bring in two runs and make the score a 3-1 affair.
The Lady Cyclones, however, couldn’t get the bats working as it was a 1-2-3 sequence in the home half of the third.
The fourth inning was an uneventful one until a Kallista Deprimo double in the bottom of the inning would eventually result in a run scored making the score after four, 3-2 in favor of Grainger.
The Lady Grizzlies were able to cushion the lead in the fifth thanks to some phenomenal hitting as eight runners would cross the plate giving Grainger an 11-2 lead late in the game.
With their backs against the wall, the Lady Cyclones were able to get things going slightly back in their direction as Maddie O’Quinn was able to bring a run across on a double to right field cutting the deficit to 11-3 going into the sixth inning.
The Lady Grizzlies kept the momentum in their favor as they were able to tack on three more runs in the sixth.
Since the Lady Cyclones weren’t able to cut into the eleven run deficit before the seventh inning, the game was called after six with a final score of 14-3 in favor of the visiting Grainger Lady Grizzlies.
