Even though Old Man Winter hasn’t really sunk his teeth into the valleys and hollers of Carter County to this point, February is well known as one of the coldest months of the year temperature-wise and the warmest to the heart as one of the first holidays of the year is celebrated with Valentine’s Day on February 14th.
Entering into February, it doesn’t take long to sense the day that has been set aside to shower those we love with cards, candy, flowers, and wonderful dinners to show them just how much they are loved and appreciated.
It’s interesting to note that Valentine’s Day was not intended the way it is celebrated today as the origination of the day came as the result of ancient Romans.
It is said that Emperor Claudius II executed two men – both named Valentine on February 14 of different years in the 3rd century A.D. Their martyrdom was honored by the Catholic Church with the celebration of St. Valentine’s Day.
The day has truly evolved as today the challenge of finding something special to surprise that extraordinary person in one’s life has taken on new meaning and often has been forgotten altogether by others.
Take for example in a recent survey of some women that have been married for a differing amount of time, when asked what the most special surprise they have received for Valentine’s Day many responded that their husband might take them out to eat if they are lucky or buy a card if they can remember.
It is especially amazing to find that most male students who have girlfriends in high school show a more romantic side than men that have already married that sweetheart in their life.
Some argue the old saying that once he has married you and gotten you that is all that is important.
Sometimes the truth of the matter is that most men are not that romantic in nature and they feel that if they are putting the bacon on the table and a roof over the head that is all that is important.
However, if one takes a look at what God has ordained in how men should treat their wives, the Bible states that men should love their wives as Christ loved the church even to the point of laying down His life for it.
To that extent, males should not only make Valentine’s Day a special time for their wives, but it should be reflective in everyday life.
With that in mind, here are a couple of suggestions for men who really struggle to come up with something special for their wives.
Felty-Roland Florist is currently taking pre-orders on a dozen roses and if ordered by February 6th, a free balloon is available with the order which is typically a charge of $5.
The cost for a dozen roses will be $78 for Valentine’s Day and Felty-Roland Florist will have additional people on hand to fill the orders and deliver if needed. The florist can be reached at 423-542-5412.
Marcia Cadle who has worked at the florist since the late 70’s said that they typically will go through 100 dozen roses during Valentine’s Day and it is important to preorder as soon as possible because as soon as the roses are gone, there is no way to get anymore due to the high demand.
When asked if she got tired of seeing so many roses, Cadle said that even after all this time she looks forward to the holidays that bring a high amount of orders through the shop.
Secondly, often men don’t realize how stressful it is for their wives to take care of the home, the children, and even work full time and how tired their bodies become.
A great option is to surprise your spouse or even girlfriend with a nice, relaxing massage from TLC Massage. Owner Taylor Collins and her staff have put together a couple of great Valentine Day specials – even one that both can enjoy.
Collins and her team offer a variety of different options that can help that special woman know how much she truly means to her boyfriend or husband by relieving tension stress points plus offering products that the special someone will appreciate including homemade soaps and Goat Milk Lotion products.
TLC Massage offers gift certificates as well that can be placed inside a card and given during a wonderful meal. The certificates are good for one full year from date of purchase.
Appointments can be made by calling Collins at 423-895-3024. They are located at 1951 Milligan Highway in Elizabethton.
Even though the article has been centered around what men can do for that special woman, it’s also important that women show that important man just how special he is as well.
And as always remember those kiddos. Sometimes in a busy world, we forget to tell the children just what they mean to us. Life is short so always make it a priority to say, ‘I love you’.
This article will be completed with four lines from the lyrics of a song written by John Paul Young in 1978 called Love Is In The Air and goes like this:
Love is in the air, everywhere I look around
Love is in the air, every sight and every sound
Love is in the air in the rising of the sun
Love is in the air when the day is nearly done
Don’t forget that one that makes your heart race each time they get near especially this Valentine’s Day.
