JOHNSON CITY – There have been a good many duos that have thrilled and entertained over the years such as Abbott & Costello, Penn & Teller, Starsky & Hutch and even Batman & Robin.
On Tuesday night at Brooks Gym, the duo of Fleenor and Meredeth combined for 63 points as University High took a Watauga Valley Conference win over Hampton by an 82-53 tally.
Guard Marshall Fleenor scored 26 points and forward Kaleb Meredeth had a game-high 37 points and the pair combined to knock down 12 treys in the Buccaneers victory.
“They shot the lights out of it tonight,” said Bulldogs head coach Ned Smith. “They were prepared and ready to play and I thought we were on our heels. They just filled it up tonight.”
Hampton (10-8, 2-1 WVC) never led in this one as UH (9-7, 3-1) took a 23-14 first period lead and never looked back.
Fleenor and Meredeth both hit trey’s on their first shot of the night and they stayed hot throughout the contest. Meredeth was particularly hot with seven trey’s while Fleenor was good for five more and they celebrated each by holding up three fingers to their fans after each successful shot.
“We have got to get to work,” Smith said. “That’s a good team there and you have to come ready to play.”
The ‘Dogs trailed 41-24 at the half with sophomore Morgan Lyons leading the way for Hampton with 10 first-half points. Lyons finished with 14 points and forward Jordan Bentley had 15 to lead the Bulldogs.
Fleenor finished 8-for-10 from the floor (80 percent) including 5-for-7 from distance while Meredeth was 14-for-23 (60.8 percent) including 7-for-8 from beyond the arc.
Hampton returns home on Friday for another tough conference clash with North Greene.

Senior post player Hazen Brumitt scored a game-high 14 points as the Lady Bulldogs won a low-scoring contest with the Lady Bucs.
UH took a 10-6 first period lead after Hampton led 6-1 with guard Ryleigh Owen hitting a pair of trey’s and senior post player Mauri Johnson adding four more points.
The Lady ‘Dogs (5-12, 2-1 WVC) got on track in the second period and took a 16-14 halftime advantage with even scoring across the board from Hampton.
“We found a way to win, but it wasn’t pretty,” commented Lady Bulldogs head coach Bud Hazelwood. “We missed 17 layups in the first half and we probably set basketball back to the Naismith days with this one.
“I’ll take an ugly win over a pretty loss though.”
The ‘Dogs took the game over in the third period with a 15-6 scoring outburst led by Brumitt’s eight points as Hampton now had a 31-20 lead going into the final period.
The ‘Dogs shut UH out in the final stanza for the final margin of victory.
Johnson led the way for UH with 10 points and 14 rebounds to go along with seven blocked shots.
