JOHNSON CITY – While the calendar was reset only a few days ago, one thing that remained ongoing was the basketball season for high schools around the area.

Friday night two of these schools, Unaka High School in Stoney Creek and University High in Johnson City, battled it out on the hardwood.

It was the girls’ contest that began the night and the Lady Rangers of Unaka came out blistering hot as they went on a 12-0 run in the first quarter and ended the period with a 12-2 advantage over the home team.

The second quarter was no different as the Lady Rangers started to create an insurmountable lead going into the break with a 27-10 advantage over the Lady Buccaneers.

The halftime intermission didn’t seem to phase the Lady Rangers as they were able to keep their momentum and go into the final quarter with an impressive 45-10 lead.

There wasn’t much left to do in this game for Unaka as all that needed to be done was for the Lady Rangers to protect the huge lead they had amassed for the first three quarters. In the end, the Lady Rangers would go on to win by a score of 57-19.

In the big victory, the Lady Rangers were led by Lyndie Ramsey with 21 points and Zoie Grindstaff with 7.

On the other hand, in the loss for the Lady Bucs Delaney Trosin finished with 6 points followed closely by Katy Stencil who finished with 5 points.

After an intermission, the boys’ squads from both schools would get underway.

Unaka struck first but the Buccaneers would catch fire as they would go on a run to end the quarter with a 24–11 lead.

The second period was a back and forth affair between the two schools keeping the Bucs at a similar advantage going into the halftime break, 35-26.

The third period started with a comeback effort by the Rangers but the Buccaneers were eventually able to make stops on defense and head into the final quarter with a sizable 53-37 lead.

The fourth quarter of play seemed like the opposite of the first game where in the girls’ contest, the Lady Rangers had to hold on to their lead in the final minutes.

The boys’ contest, however, saw the Buccaneers holding onto their lead as they would go on to win by a final of 76-62.

Marshall Fleenor led the Buccaneers with 24 points in the game followed by Kaleb Meredith with 18 and Mason Broome with 13 points.

In the Rangers’ loss, Will Sexton put up a game-high 41 points and was followed by Dylan Whitehead who was able to score 11 points.
