BRISTOL – The Elizabethton Cyclones needed to keep The Feet under them from the opening tip but by the time the intermission had rolled around it was evident these Feet were made for running and nothing was going to slow them down on this night.
The Webb School from Bell Buckle whose unique nickname, The Feet, is about the only thing that can bring a giggle from an opposing team showed that even without five-star Tennessee Volunteer commit Keon Johnson, they are a team that will have to be dealt with in the 37th annual Arby’s Classic being played at Viking Hall in Bristol.
The Webb School took a 20-point win, 65-45.
After taking a 3-0 lead on a Jake Roberts trey to open the game, The Webb School quickly quenched any thought the Cyclones had of winning the prime time showcase as the Feet built an 18-11 advantage at the first stop and quickly extended that to a 16-point edge, 37-21 at the intermission.
The Cyclones were their own worst enemy many times getting impatient and turning that impatience into key turnovers that allowed The Webb School to build their advantage as Elizabethton committed 19 turnovers in the contest.
With the two teams relatively close in rebounding with the Feet holding a two-rebound advantage, 26-24, the Cyclones did manage to stay within distance in the second half but ran completely out of time.
The Feet only outscored the Cyclones 28-24 in the final 16 minutes of action but did most of their damage in the early going.
Jordan Jenkins pasted the nets to the tune of a game-high 24-points to lead The Webb School while J.J. Platt accounted for 20 points as the two athletic ballers covered a combined 44 of the 65 points scored by the Feet.
Only three other players reached the scoring column for The Webb School with Amos Howard (9), Khi Harris (6), and Alex Garrett (6) accounted for the remaining points for the Feet.
Meanwhile, the Cyclones still without the services of sophomore guard Bryson Rollins and junior guard Parker Hughes who are both out with injuries, received a team-high 13 points from Jake Roberts who connected on 2-of-4 from three-point land.
High leaping Nico Ashley recorded 11 points while pulling down five rebounds with Donta Earnest coming off the bench to add six points as well.
William Willocks (4), Seth Carter (3), Brayden Phillips (3), Bryce VanHuss (3), and Jordan Haynes (2) closed out the scoring ledger for the Cyclones.
“There’s a lot of little things that we’ve talked about before that come to mind when you face a defense like that,” stated Cyclone head coach Lucas Honeycutt. “We didn’t do a good job in a lot of areas and its something that we have been working on and have been making progress.
“It’s something that should help us against other teams. We are looking forward to seeing how much this is going to help us moving forward.”
Honeycutt went on to add that in the early going that his team may have been a little overwhelmed by their opponent.
“We were intimidated and had a lack of confidence,” added Honeycutt. “It kind of went back and forth. We shot some shots quick that went in and that wasn’t a good thing for us going forward because we never got in an offense from that point on.
“We just grabbed it and shot it and we can’t beat anybody like that.”
