A new folk band has formed around three Elizabethton locals. Overmountain Sound consists of Tim Nave, Grant Taylor and Caleb Gouge. According to Taylor, the name comes from roots in the area. “The name Overmountain Sound comes from the history of our community and the part that the Overmountain Men played in the Revolutionary War,” Taylor said. The band was formed several months ago by the three men, all of which have been performing music since their early teens. It all began with Nave asking Gouge and Taylor to join him on a couple of gigs, which eventually turned into more.
“Tim asked if Grant and I would want to play a couple gigs with him,” Gouge said. ”A couple gigs turned into a couple more, and we had the idea to just start a three-piece folk band. The shows have been going great and we’re always practicing new material to play for folks. I like a lot of the material Tim has came up with.”
For his take on how the band formed, Taylor had a comical answer.
“We picked Caleb Gouge up on the side of the road one night and just let him in the band because we got tired of him begging us (just kidding),” Taylor joked.
For Nave, he enjoys telling stories through folk music.
“I geared my song writing towards a folk sound a few years ago,” Nave said. ”I’ve lived next to the sounds of genuine folk, country, and bluegrass music for many years. I wanted to tell stories inspired by this area, and it’s only right that I tell those stories in a manner similar to those genres.”
While Nave and Taylor do not necessarily have a favorite song they have created as of yet, Gouge does.
“We recently recorded a 3 song EP and one of them is called ‘Afraid.’ It talks about PTSD and how it can take its toll on our veterans. I really like the story it tells and instrumentals in it,” Gouge said.
The band will release the EP (extended play) during a show in February and an album in March.
