Led by a pair of eighth-graders the T.A. Dugger Junior Lady Cyclones completed a sweep of Vance on Monday evening. The Lady Cyclones got eight points and seven rebounds from post Marlee Mathena and two points and six boards from Abbie Crigger as T.A. Dugger posted a 39-15 victory.
“We’re a good offensive team but we are better when we get our post players involved,” said head coach Matt Fox. “When we move the ball in and out we are much improved and we showed that against Liberty Bell and Ross Robinson two of the better teams in our league. We are a better team when we move the ball into the post.”
Dugger took a 14-5 first period lead and built it into a 24-8 halftime bulge with seventh-grader Kayelyn Nave’s eight points leading the way. Mathena had six first-half points and the Cyclones defense held Vance to one-for-seven from the floor.
Dugger (10-3 overall, 6-2 conference) took a 33-12 lead into the final period when Fox opened up his bench and sealed the win with youngsters on the court. Mollie Johnson had six points and was a force defensively.
“Mollie Johnson may be the smallest player on the court but she has a big heart,” Fox said. “She has no fear and she has been getting more confident and energy-wise we feed off her.”
Defensively the Cyclones forced 19 turnovers and held the Lady Vikings to 3-of-16 from the floor (18.7 percent) and outrebounded Vance by a 32-16 margin.

Sixth-grader Andrea Flores was a spark plug for the Lady Cyclones with 19 points and three steals as TA Dugger opened with a big win over Vance.
Flores controlled the basketball with drives down the lane that produced points and frustrated the Vikings defenders.
TAD opened with a 9-0 first period and had an 18-0 lead before the Vikings got their first points on a three-ball from Kerrigan West. The Lady Cyclones led 23-4 at the break with Flores 10 points leading the way.
Flores scored eight third-quarter points as TAD opened a 35-13 lead going into the fourth period. Aubrey Cole and Lillie McDuffie each had four points for TAD while Kylie Dillard had nine points to lead the way for Vance.
