Beautiful voices and musicians in the tradition of the Appalachians will right out the coming of  Jesus’ birth at Appalachian Evensong Sunday at St. Thomas Episcopal Church in Elizabethton.

The service will begin at 6 p.m. and will feature Hebrew and New Testament scripture foretelling the coming of the birth of Jesus. The scripture readings will be joined by music, including voice, guitar, mandolin, hammered dulcimer, and a Carter County fiddle or two.

Doors will open at 5:30 p.m. for gathering and singing. Hymns from the 17th Century up through today will be rendered by the Doe River Ensemble at St. Thomas.

The community is also invited to the “greening” and “quilting” at the church on Saturday, beginning at 10 a.m. Beautiful quilts such as “Snowflake,” “ Bear Paw,” “Birds of Paradise,” “Log Cabin,””Blazing Star,” and “Churn Dash” will adorn the historic church located behind the Courthouse.

“We prepare the way for Jesus’ birth by readying our hearts and souls in prayer, Bible reading, cherishing family and community, and loving one another,” said Father Timothy Holder. “Only then can we know and celebrate the full meaning of Christmas.”

An offering will be received for the Assistance and Resource Ministries (ARM) to feed the hungry, provide clothing, and other basic necessities for those in need.
