TCAT — Aaron Garland of Washington County said he is seeking professional advancement by studying Diesel Power Equipment Technology at TCAT Elizabethton.
The Erwin native will become a Diesel Technician when he graduates. Tim Ward, his instructor, said Garland is focused on becoming an well-rounded diesel technician. “Aaron is an excellent student. He has a personal desire to succeed in his studies and, each day, enriches his knowledge of the subject matter in every possible way,” Ward said.
Garland’s work ethic and drive to succeed were instrumental in him being selected by a panel of judges to be the 2019 Student the Year at TCAT Elizabethton, according to Patricia Henderson, student services coordinator.
Garland said he enrolled in the Diesel Power Equipment Technology program at TCAT Elizabethton to give him an “employment advantage” in the region. When he completes the 20-month program at TCAT Elizabethton, he will receive a diploma as a Diesel Technician.
“I grew up in Erwin and graduated from Unicoi County High School. Afterwards I worked and went to school off and on. None of the education that I received led to any professional advancement. I eventually was hired on full time as a corporate retailer,” he said.
After doing some soul searching, Garland said he realized the work he was doing was in no way satisfying for him. “I learned that there is a significant demand for Diesel Technicians. I found out about the Tennessee College of Applied Technology in Elizabethton,” Garland said.
Next, he contacted Tim Ward, who is the head of the Diesel Powered Equipment Technology department. “Mr. Ward informed me of what I could expect from the program, if I was willing to put in the work that is required.” That discussion convinced Garland that it was what he wanted to do. “The faculty at TCAT assisted me in securing funding for my class time.”
Led by faith in God and the support of his wife, Garland ventured into unchartered waters.
“I prayed and thanked God for this opportunity. I also promised him I would be at the top of my class. I’m keeping that promise. From here, I know exactly the direction I’m heading. Until then, I have more work to do,” Garland said.
