JOHNSON CITY – It was an eventful weekend for Elizabethton as on Friday night the Cyclone football team moved on to the state semifinal game and the Lady Cyclones basketball team took on rival Science Hill in some round ball action the following afternoon.
In a game that is considered one of the biggest rivalries in the area the Lady Cyclones would start out on fire, but eventually, momentum would fall on the Lady Toppers’ side resulting in a tough loss for Elizabethton.
The game between the two teams that are separated by a drive of about fifteen minutes started out as a defensive battle.
As a result of the lockdown defense by both schools, points were limited and the score would sit at 13-9 in favor of the Lady Cyclones after the first quarter.
In the second period, the Lady Cyclones would begin to separate themselves from the home team thanks to excellent ball movement and a great display of sharpshooting.
But the Lady Toppers would begin to find their way back late in the half and tie the game up at 30 apiece at the break.
To start the second half the Lady Hilltoppers came out firing on all cylinders while the Lady Cyclones were not able to get anything to go their way.
As a result, the score at the end of three was now a 19-point lead in favor of the home team, 56-37.
With only eight minutes left to play the Lady Cyclones would begin a valiant comeback attempt but with little time left on the clock, Elizabethton would fall to the Lady Toppers by a final score of 68-53.
Kaylen Shell led the Lady Cyclones in scoring with 20 points, followed by Kaitlin Bailey with 10, and Lina Lyon with 9 points.
Elizabethton also got five points each from Morgan Headrick and Torrie Roberts. Kelsie Winters and Cheyenne VanHuss dropped in two points apiece.
For Science Hill, Alasia Smith led three players in double figures with a game-high 24. Erin Egerbrecht and Nae Marion added 14 and 12  respectively.
