Milligan finishes perfect October

MILLIGAN COLLEGE – With their win over Montreat Tuesday night, the Milligan College volleyball team finished the month of October with a perfect record of 10-0. Milligan defeated Montreat for the second time this season to sweep the regular-season series.
The Buffs beat the Cavaliers in four sets (25-19, 25-13, 22-25, 25-10). Before the game, Milligan also honored their three seniors, Julie Dockery, Kellee Geren, and Alyssa Gibson.
By the numbers
Geren had a match-high of 49 assists with her two main targets being Carley Gregory who had a match-high of 17 kills, and Gibson who had 11 kills.
The Buffs defense was led by Layla Grant with 24 digs and Cameron McConnell and Ashelyn Vandergriff who had 13 and 10 digs respectively.
Milligan had eight blocks with Julia Codispoti recording two blocks by herself. Milligan out killed Montreat .259 to .014.
Set-by-set
Milligan and Montreat kept it close the entire first set until an 8-1 run by Milligan gave them the lead they needed to finish the game victorious. Gregory recorded four kills in the first set to contribute to the 11 kills they had in the first set.
The second set was all Milligan who only gave up the lead once during the set at the beginning. Milligan recorded 16 kills in the second set and went on a 12-3 run to put the set away.
Six Milligan kills occurred in the last nine rallies with three being from Dockery.
Milligan jumped out quick making the score 8-3 in the third set, but the Cavaliers went on an 11-4 run at the end of the set to win.
Back to back kills by Taylor Carrillo gave Montreat the last two points they needed to not fall to the Buffs in three.
Milligan answered back in the fourth set and dominated the entire set. The Buffs had 12 kills and zero attack errors.
Milligan was able to capitalize on 11 Montreat attack errors. Codispoti scored the game-winning point with a kill to give her nine kills on the night.
Up next
The Buffs finish out regular season play on Thursday, Nov. 7, against Union College in Steve Lacy Fieldhouse.
Previously this season the Bulldogs beat Milligan in five sets. Milligan is only a half-game behind Union who is in first place in the North Division of the Appalachian Athletic Conference standings.
