The Carver Recreation Center in Johnson City is broadening the horizons of those served, assisted by the Tennessee College of Applied Technology.
Herb Greenlee, who has been director of the organization for three decades, is excited about serving children and parents in a variety of ways, including mentoring, taking field trips to historical sites and having presentations from organizations like TCAT Elizabethton.
On Tuesday, Oct. 1, two instructors from TCAT Elizabethton, Melody Bailey and Allen Trent, will join Eddie Pless, recruiter, in speaking to students and parents about training opportunities at the college. The event begins at 6 p.m.
“At Carver Recreation Center, we are attempting to help students and their families find a successful career in today’s workplace,” Greenlee said. In short, they encourage students to stay in school, discourage drop outs, in the student’s path leading to a successful career.
Some 40 to 50 youngsters usually attend after school functions held at the Carver Recreation Center, which operates under the auspices of the Johnson City Parks. A 501C3 foundation has been established to receive donations. Greenleee said checks must be made payable to the Johnson City Parks Foundation and earmarked for the Carver Recreation Center.
Greenlee said a mentoring fair will be held at Carver Recreation Center on Nov. 12. That event is designed to bridge the gap between students and their career choices, Greenlee said.
The Carver Recreation Center is located at 322 West Watauga Ave., Johnson City. For more information, contact Greenlee at 423-461-8830.
