Robert H. “Bob” Shields passed from this life on June 18, 2019.
Bob was born in Elizabethton, Tenn., on September 8, 1931 to Avis Moreland Shields and D.H. “Nick” Shields.
Bob served in the United States Air Force during the Korean War. He received a B.S. Degree in Wildlife Management from Utah State University, beginning work as a Refuge Manager and retiring as Deputy Regional Director in the Denver Office of the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service. Some of his earlier duties included management of the declining Whooping Crane population on the Arkansas Wildlife Refuge in Texas, and acquisition of 125,000 acres of wetlands for the establishment of the Great Dismal Swamp Refuge located in SE Virginia.
After retiring from government service, Bob and his wife Kathy opened furniture stores in Lakewood, Littleton and Westminster, Colo., and worked as a team operating those stores for 18 years. Another retirement came for Bob in 1999. Bob and Kathy moved to New Mexico in 2017.
Bob lived a life that was full of significant contributions to his country and the health of the environment. He also shared many outdoor adventures with Kathy camping, fishing and shooting. But he would say the crowning achievement of his life was his relationship with Jesus Christ.
A family memorial service is planned in the mountains of Utah later this summer.
Survivors include his wife, Kathleen Glenn Shields of Golden, Colo.; daughter, Deborah Anne Parsons of Snellville, Ga.; sons, Robert Matthew Shields of Johnson City, Tenn., and Mark Petrey Shields of Rio Rancho, N.M.; and stepdaughter, Laura Kay Rawlins, Issaquah, Wash. Bob had eight grandchildren and 10 great-grandchildren.
Donations may be made to Harvesting in Spanish, P.O. Box 331012, Murfreesboro, TN 37130, a Christian Orphanage in El Salvador.
