KINGSPORT—if the T.A. Dugger Jr. Cyclone baseball team had a favorite song playing on repeat, it would assuredly be the Bee Gees classic ‘Staying Alive’.
Monday evening in Kingsport, the Jr. Cyclones remained alive in the Big 6 tournament with a 9-3 win over Sevier which advances the team to the loser’s bracket final Tuesday evening against Vance from Bristol.
Vance defeated T.A. Dugger earlier in the tournament to put the Jr. Cyclones in the loser’s bracket so a little payback will be in order.
The Jr. Cyclones wasted little time getting on the scoreboard as they scored four runs in the first inning and a solo run in the second to take a 5-0 advantage.
Sevier did rally to score three runs in the top of the third inning, but the Jr. Cyclones quickly rallied in the fourth inning with four more runs to put the game on ice.
Wesley Shankles was in control from the pitching rubber as Shankles went six strong innings allowing three runs on only three hits and striking out five Sevier batters.
Bryson Rowland came in relief for Shankles in the seventh inning.
While Shankles was keeping Sevier handcuffed at the plate, the Jr. Cyclones had the hot sticks as they rapped out 14 hits in the contest.
Jack Farris and Peyton Johnson had strong performances at the plate batting 3-for-4 each to lead the Jr. Cyclone attack.
Kaleb Hambrick added a multi-hit game going 2-for-3 in the contest. Nate Stephens, Will Taylor, Brilee Hurley, Shankles, Hayden Nave, and Alex Gouge added one hit apiece.
TAD also was impressive on the base path swiping 12 bases in the contest led by Farris with three steals in the game.
With a win over Vance, the Jr. Cyclones would advance to the championship game on Wednesday night in Kingsport.
