KINGSPORT – On championship Monday for District 1A girls basketball at J. Richard Carroll gymnasium, defense was dominant once again. In the championship game free throws were the difference as North Greene guard Haleigh Bernard went 6-for-8 from the stripe in the fourth quarter to help the Lady Huskies to a 42-36 win over Cloudland.
“These single A games are so physical and these teams are so evenly matched,” Lady Huskies head coach James Buchanan said. “It went back and forth and we were fortunate to hit some free throws down the stretch to win it.”
A low scoring first half saw the Lady Highlanders take a 16-14 lead into the locker room at halftime with senior Trinity Vines five points leading the way. North Greene battled back to take a 27-26 lead into the final eight minutes with Breanna Savage and Charlotte Raschowski leading the way.
In the fourth period, senior post Stacia Wilson – who scored a game-high 16 points – scored all 10 of Cloudland’s fourth-quarter points.
“We mishandled the ball a time or two,” Lady ‘Landers head coach Mike Lunsford said. “We didn’t take a shot that we should. Got the ball inside and should have taken a shot, but made an extra pass. We did everything we needed to do except put the ball in the hole.”
Savage had a team-high 13 points with Bernard adding 12 for North Greene.

Unaka (16-17) jumped out to a 14-8 first-period lead by hitting four 3-balls. Madison Pierce had two while Jada Whitehead and Savannah Tipton were each good for one. Leann Guinn had a pair of two-point buckets for the Lady Bulldogs.
The Lady Rangers hot shooting continued in the second quarter with Tipton dropping in two more trey’s and Pierce had her third and Unaka led 26-19 at the half. Tipton led all scorers with 12 first-half points while Guinn paced the ‘Dogs with eight.
Unaka extended to a 10-point lead at 34-24 on a 3-ball from Whitehead with 1:19 left in the stanza. The ‘Dogs closed to within six at the end of the third period and after four free throws – two each from Guinn and Haley Carden – Hampton made it a two-point game at 34-32 with 4:29 remaining.
“We got it to one point and then dropped a pass out of bounds,” Lady Bulldogs head coach Bud Hazelwood said. “Then they go down and hit a three so instead of us up one, we’re down four. I’m proud of my girls they battled their tails off.”
Unaka slogged through a 6:57 scoring drought from Whitehead’s trey until a Myah Parlier deuce with 2:03 left gave the Rangers a 36-33 advantage. Senior guard Stephanie Campbell scored a basket for Hampton and after a Rangers turnover, Hampton failed to capitalize as they also had a turnover.
Pierce knocked down her fifth 3-ball of the contest to stake Unaka to a 39-35 lead with 36.8 ticks remaining. The Rangers finished with 10-for-18 (55.5 percent) shooting from distance.
“We kept fouling them and they kept hitting free throws,” Lady Rangers head coach Kenneth Chambers said. “They did a good job on Myah and we had to take what they gave us. We had to make our three’s because they surrounded Myah so hard, and we have some good shooters, so it was pick your poison. Savannah hit big free throws and when a game is close I want the ball in her hands.”
Tipton finished with a game-high 16 points for Unaka while Pierce added 15. Guinn led Hampton with 13 and Campbell added seven.
