Bonnie Kate to reopen soon

With a fixed roof, the Bonnie Kate Theater in downtown Elizabethton is closing in on its reopening.

Chairman of the theater’s advisory board, John Huber, said that he believes the venue should be up and running in about a week.

The theater shut down due to a collapsed ductwork and roof repairs, and Huber said that those repairs are now completed. With the roof work done, Huber said that work on a new sprinkler system is next in line, but also said that the sprinkler system update shouldn’t affect the operation of the theater.

“We are now focusing on the sprinkler system, and some other necessary things that need to be done,” said Huber.

Huber went on to say that the renovations of the Bonnie Kate will be an ongoing project which could bring new things to the 90-year-old venue. The theater can be utilized for plays, musicals, musical performances, and even movies.

“It is a long-term project, and we are seeking various grants,” said Huber. “In the process of doing that, there are certain requirements that we have to fulfill and we are seeing to those.”

The theater has hosted shows and plays since the revitalization projects started roughly three years ago, and Huber has been happy with the turnout.

“For all of the functions that we have had, so far, we have had tremendous turnout,” said Huber. “Things have been very successful, and we are pleased with that. As we move along with renovations, I think we will do better than that.”
