BEECH MOUNTAIN, N.C. — It has been a busy four days for the Carter County Rescue Squad.

Over those four days, the rescue squad has responded to three rescue missions.

The third came last night as five divers and a tender with the Carter County Rescue Squad made their way to Beech Mountain where they assisted the Beech Mountain Police Department in saving a contract diver at Buckeye Lake.

According to Carter County Rescue Coordinator Johnny Burleson, the call came in at 8:26 p.m. that the diver was trapped roughly 22 feet underwater after being suctioned to a tube. A diver with the rescue squad made his way down to the man and connected a rope to him. The rope was then used to pull the gentleman out of the water.

“We ended up putting one of our divers in the water and had him tethered,” said Burleson. “He went down, hooked a rope and used a pull system. We were able to pull that diver up and off of the suction that had him pinned.”

The divers were able to get the trapped man out of the water at roughly 10:03 p.m., and he was transported to a local hospital in Boone, N.C.

“I am just thankful that we were able to help him,” said Burleson.

Burleson went on to say that missions like the one Tuesday night can be very dangerous to anyone involved.

“In the business, this is what we call low frequency, high risk,” said Burleson. “Because it is a very high risk to the people involved. That is why we have everybody involved tethered with rope. If something happens, we can pull them. We can also use the rope to communicate.”
