Thousands from across the region were on hand Monday evening inside Freedom Hall in Johnson City for a historic visit from President Donald Trump.

Trump was in the region for a rally in the Tri-Cities supporting Republican candidates, primarily U.S. Congresswoman Marsha Blackburn. Blackburn is currently in a contested U.S. Senate race with former Tennessee governor and Democratic Party candidate Phil Bredesen.

Met with applause as he arrived on stage, Trump expressed the importance of the November election, citing a Democrat Party takeover in Congress will put the country into chaos. Trump indicated that a vote for Bredesen is a vote for current Democrat leaders, including Chuck Schumer, Maxine Waters, Nancy Pelosi and Dianne Feinstein. Republicans currently hold a 51-49 advantage in the Senate.

Blackburn, who took the stage for a short speech after being introduced by the president, talked about a “blue wave” and when it reaches Tennessee, it will run into a “great red wall.”

Monday was a hectic day for Trump, who earlier announced America entered into a new trade deal with Canada and Mexico — dubbed USMCA — and officially put an end to NAFTA.

During the rally, Trump said the new trade agreement will be a benefit to Americans, including Tennesseans.

A variety of Republican leaders and Republican candidates were in attendance for the event, which saw thousands having to move to overflow seating. Congressman Phil Roe, who is running opposed in the November election against Democrat Marty Olsen, said there was an estimated 92,000 tickets claimed online, the most for any “Make America Great Again” rally in the country.

Others in attendance included current governor Bill Haslam. The Tennessee Governor praised the efforts of Trump and was quick to praise the efforts of Republican gubernatorial candidate Bill Lee. Lee, who is running against Democrat and former Nashville Mayor Karl Dean in November, talked about the importance of having an outsider like Trump in office, and that has led to his success. Lee also discussed his campaign strategy of visiting 95 counties in 95 days and talked about the importance Northeast Tennessee has meant to his campaign.

Trump arrived at the venue a little after 6 p.m. after touching down at Tri-Cities Airport in Blountville. A variety of security personnel, including officers from the Carter County Sheriff’s Office, Elizabethton Police Department and local constables, were on site to assist with the event. Freedom Hall holds around 8,500 inside while Trump estimated around 20,000 outside the venue.

Other topics of discussion during the rally included Brett Kavanaugh, who is currently under an FBI investigation and is in the running to become a Supreme Court Justice. Trump stated the Democrats are out to destroy the nominee and are still bitter about the 2016 election.
