Hampton CTE students win awards, net over $1,000 for program

Steady progression is the name of the game for Hampton High School.
Recently, students from the Career and Technical Education (CTE) Department at the school participated in the 2018 Appalachian Fair competition and came away with high marks.
Out of 20 schools, Hampton placed third overall and won $1,014 for the CTE programs at the school. Hampton finished right behind David Crockett (second) and winner Dobyns-Bennett.
At the conclusion of the competition, Hampton students finished with 41 blue first place ribbons, 36 red second place ribbons and 18 white third place ribbons.
Individually, Zack Oliver won 37 first place ribbons, 30 second place ribbons and 12 third place ribbons. Lillian Street took home two first place, two second place and one third place accolades. Landon Street earned one first place, thtree second place and one third place. Weston Street won one first place and two third place nods. Trinity Camillo also added one second place and third place ribbon. Macon Barden and Everette Lydick also assisted in the competition.
During the competition, students’ work was presented to a bevy of judges, which in turned scored exhibits and displays on their quality of work. It’s been all about steady progression for the Hampton CTE group. In 2014, the group’s efforts netted the program almost $80 in winnings. After taking a break in 2015, the winnings have only gone up over the years in 2016 ($301) and 2017 ($744).
With 2018 netting the program over $1,000, Zack stated the joy was all about working together with his classmates and instructors.
“We came in during Mr. Arnett’s inservice week to come up with projects,” he said. “It feels great to work together, pick up these awards and be able to support the program.”
Students that participated were part of CTE classes taught by Daniel Arnett, Lisa Jenkins and Bruce Wiltshire. Weston and Landon were also quick mention the enjoyment of working alongside their teammates during the event.
“We came in during the summer and worked pretty hard on this,” said Landon. “It feels great to get the awards from it.”
Lillian added the work was the final product of over a year’s worth of work and that it was great to see all the products receive rave reviews from the judgements.
Camillo was quick to share her classmates’ sentiments, adding the best part of the event was working together.
