Dorothy Sarter Whitaker

Mrs. Dorothy Sarter Whitaker, 95, of Elizabethton, went home to be with the Lord on Monday, August 20, 2018, at Ivy Hall Nursing Home. She was a daughter of the late George and Risie Drain Charlton and was born in Greeneville, Tenn. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her first husband, Hyman Sarter, her second husband, Donald Whitaker, and four siblings.
Mrs. Whitaker was a homemaker. She loved to sew and cook and was a member of Grace Baptist Church. She also served the First Baptist Church of Brooklyn (known as the “Baptist Temple” established in 1823) as a Sunday School teacher. She was a member of Children’s Bible Fellowship in New York City for 10 years and a 12-year member of the Bible and Fruit Mission to the Public Hospitals of New York City.
Those left to cherish her memory include three sisters, Grace Lepkofker, Polly Mattaliano and Lillian Zambri, all of Elizabethton; a brother, Richard Charlton of Elizabethton; a step-daughter, Roberta Mitchell of Limestone; three step-sons, Donald Whitaker, Wayne Whitaker and Philip Whitaker; a loving nephew, Martin Pousa of Johnson City; and two special friends, Helen Egli and Jean Montgomery. Several other nieces and nephews also survive.
A service to honor the life of Mrs. Whitaker will be conducted at noon on Wednesday, August 22, in the Riverside Chapel of Tetrick Funeral Home with Pastor Chris Hughes officiating. Music will be under the direction of Pastor Chris Hughes and Anita Fields, flutist. The family will receive friends in the funeral home chapel from 11 a.m. until noon on Wednesday, prior to the service. Interment will follow the funeral service at Happy Valley Memorial Park. Active pallbearers will be selected from family and friends. Those who prefer memorials in lieu of flowers may make donations to the Wounded Warrior Project, www.woundedwarriorproject.org.
