Attendees at the annual Back To School Bash at Harmony Freewill Baptist Church on Saturday spent the day enjoying a variety of games and activities while getting school supplies for the coming year.
This year marked the 10th year for the event, which has grown every year. Volunteers handed out around 1,500 backpacks to children along with school supplies, shoes, and clothing items. Turnout for the event was so high that the church ran out of backpacks to give out.
The Carter County School System and several local churches and organizations partnered with Harmony Freewill Baptist Church to make the event a success.
In addition to the giveaways of school supplies and clothes, the children were treated to an afternoon of fun, games, and activities as well as typical “fair” foods such as funnel cakes and cotton candy.
Members of Harmony Freewill Baptist Church also presented a small skit for those in attendance. This year’s theme was “Christmas in July,” and the skit featured popular Christmas character The Grinch. In the play, The Grinch steals all the backpacks. But after hearing about Jesus, The Grinch accepts Christ into his heart, which coincidentally grows three sizes. The Grinch then returns the backpacks to the Whos down in Whoville so the children can get a happy start for their new school year.
