An annual tradition continues this weekend with the hope of giving back to the community, and its children.

Carter County Car Club members are gearing up for their annual all day car show, set to take place from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. on Saturday, July 14, throughout downtown Elizabethton. The event will run into the normal weekend installment of the cruise-in, which lasts from 5 to 9 p.m. each Saturday.

While each event is geared for fellowship and a bonding experience for car enthusiasts, the cruise-ins and all day show are used as ways to raise funds for various children’s charities throughout the region. Registration is $20 the day of and all proceeds from the event go toward supporting the club’s mission.

“We’re going to have different door prizes, gift bags and other treats for the public,” said Ron McCloud, club president. “Typically this event allows us to spend the day to raise funds for the different children’s charities. With the registration fees, we can typically raise around $3,000 or so. It’s a great opportunity for people to come together, spend time together downtown and share in a good cause.”

While the car show brings in its fair share of spectators, McCloud added the day gives the public a chance to see what downtown Elizabethton has to offer.

“There’s more for the spectators than just the cars,” he said. “Each of our downtown shops will be open during the show. It gives them an opportunity to stop by, see the cars and visit the different shops and restaurants. It’s a great way to bring people downtown to see what we have to offer.”

Since the 1980s, the club has used the cruise-in and show as a way to raise funds for the Salvation Army Christmas Angel Tree Program, Friends Downs Syndrome Program, the Dolly Parton Imagination Library, Children’s Evangelism Program, Carter County Schools Accelerated Reader Program and the Boys and Girls Club of Elizabethton/Carter County.

And for 2018, the club is right on course with their donation goal, McCloud said.

“This year’s cruise-in season has been great. We’ve seen donations increase and the weather has cooperated, most of the time,” he added.
