Mrs. Edwards was a graduate of Science Hill High School and earned a Bachelor’s Degree from East Tennessee State University. She was a high school teacher in the Unicoi County School System. During her time as a teacher, she mentored many students and continued to communicate with several even after their graduation from high school, especially with the students who served the United States during the Vietnam War. She was generous and compassionate and will be remembered as a friend to many.
She and her husband, Willis, were the original owners of the Plant Palace in Erwin. After they retired, they enjoyed traveling all over the United States. They had a home in Tucson, Ariz., for several years before Alta returned to Johnson City to live closer to her family following the death of her husband. She was a member of First United Methodist Church in Elizabethton.
Those left to cherish her memory include three daughters, Catherine Edwards-Bunton (Scotty) of Elizabethton, Ellen Van Dyke (Thomas) of Damascus, Va., and Julie Vanover (Vic) of Concord, N.C.; an “adopted” son, Harold Rice (Margaret) of Erwin; seven grandchildren and five great-grandchildren. Several nieces and nephews also survive.
