For one night, a community will band together to recognize the efforts of the American Cancer Society and citizens from Carter County.
Jessica Poff, with ACS, formally announced the 2018 Relay For Life of Carter County is set for Friday, June 22, from 6 p.m. to midnight at Tennessee College of Applied Technology (TCAT) – Elizabethton. The event is geared to honor cancer survivors, their caregivers and pay tribute to those that lost their lives to cancer.
“The American Cancer Society’s Relay For Life of Carter County event ignites team spirit among participants and works to raise funds used to save lives through research, programs and services by helping you stay well, helping you get well by finding cures, and by fighting back,” Poff said in a statement issued to the Elizabethton Star.
In 2017, more than 2,000 free cancer programs and services were provided to residents of Carter and Johnson counties.”
This year’s Relay event is organized as a beach party. Different activities and items will be available during the day, including food, inflatables and games. Various Relay teams will be set up during the day to take up donations in exchange for food, crafts and other fun. The vendors for the event include, Mason Joe’s Coffee, David’s Famous Fudge, The Shed Grub and Grill, Lizzie’s Doughnuts, Mary Kay and Plunder Jewelry
“The purpose of the event is to promote that cancer takes no vacation, so education, support and awareness are important to everyone,” Poff said. “Everyone has a story to share because cancer has impacted us all. We celebrate hope year round and we want to publicly celebrate and remember together on this date in support of all ages, all cancer types and our community.”
The tradition will also take place at the TCAT premise. Luminaria bags are also available for purchase and will be used as ways to remember those affected by cancer during the event.
