School may be out for the summer, but area youth have an opportunity to learn about the performing arts with professionals.
Marcia Ross, with the Bonnie Kate Theater, announced the facility is offering a variety of opportunities for children to delve into.
Starting June 11, budding actors between 6-14 years old have the chance to either be part of a full day camp or half day camp titled “Tunes and Tales from the Pond.”
The times are 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. for the full day and 1 to 4 p.m. for the half day. The full day is $100 and the half day is $50.
Ross stated the camp will be used as a way for students to get a hands-on experience of how to work on a show, with the ending result being a musical. Registration and payment can be made the first day of the camp.
Continuing to have a presence in the performing arts realm is of importance for the facility, according to Ross, with the Bonnie Kate serving as a prime location for local artists to hone their craft. Various productions have taken place in the facility since its reopening, including youth camps and performances from the Elizabethton High School Drama Club.
Another opportunity on the horizon is a two-week advanced camp being held July 9-21 for ages 7 to 18 years old. Ross announced that The Drifting Theater with Christy Alaska Reece Vance will be leading the program, which concludes with the presentations of the comedy “Rah Rah Red.”
Weekday classes and rehearsals will last from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. with the final performance taking place July 20-21 at 2 p.m. and 7 p.m. The cost for the camp is $250 and individuals can visit www.thedriftingtheatre.com for more information.
Maintaining a budding community presence is also key, according to Ross. The Bonnie Kate is working alongside the Elizabethton/Carter County Public Library to offer three movie events.
On June 30, the facility will have a showing of the Disney movie “A Bug’s Life.” Two other movies coming up include “Harry Potter” and “The Lion King.”
Further details on the events will be made available in the coming weeks, but Ross added the events are just another way the Bonnie Kate hopes to encourage visitors to see what’s available at the facility and downtown Elizabethton.
