In baseball, throwing a no-hitter is no easy feat.
And so far this season, Unaka junior John “Boy” Ramsey has thrown three of them.
According to the Tennessee Baseball Report website, Ramsey’s three no-hitters ties him up with Chuckey-Doak’s Josh Kite for most no-hitters in a season in Northeast Tennessee. Kite had three no-hitters in 2000. The state record for most no-hitters in a season is four and was set in 1980 by Billy Lloyd, per the website.
“It is just truly a blessing,” said Ramsey about his accomplishment. “God has just blessed me with the ability to pitch and everything. All the hard work I have put in is starting to pay off.”
Ramsey’s no-hitters came during wins against Cloudland, Hancock County, and Providence Academy. Over the season, the Ranger has amassed a 9-1 record with 108 strikeouts over 58 innings of pitching.
According to Unaka head coach Tee Blevins, no-hitters are pretty tough to come by and to get three in one season is quite the achievement.
“No matter who you are throwing against getting a no-hitter is big in baseball,” said Blevins. “So many things can happen in a baseball game like a little blooper or a bunt. Anytime you throw a no-hitter that is a big accomplishment. And to throw three in one season that speaks for itself.”
The Rangers are in the middle of the District 1-A baseball tournament and will play Sullivan North Monday.
