Local Walgreens raising awareness for child poverty

During the month of May, Walgreens stores across the country are encouraging the public to don their “red noses” to show awareness for child poverty.

This mission is no different in Elizabethton as Walgreens staff is preparing to offer the inaugural “Noses On!” photoshoot on Saturday, May 5, at 1 p.m. at Covered Bridge Park.

Jennifer Mech, from the city’s store, told the Elizabethton Star Wednesday afternoon that the goal is to have members from the community show up with their “red nose” to take a photo to help raise awareness for the cause. A special group photo of all attendees will also be available and be promoted via social media and other avenues.

The store is offering a $1 4×6 photo from the event for those that participate. All proceeds from the project will go to support Red Nose Day.

“We’re hoping to have as many Carter County residents as possible to stop by,” Mech said. “This is such an amazing town and we know the support is there. We’re just asking people that have a free moment Saturday to stop by and show support for a great cause.”

All a person needs is their own “red nose” which is available for purchase at the Walgreens location, off Broad Street in Elizabethton, for just $1.

2018 marks the fourth consecutive year of “Red Nose Day.” The entire initiative is celebrated until the first week of June but the official Red Nose Day is Thursday, May 24.

According to information provided by the store, Walgreens is committed to raising funds through the sale of red noses and is using the initiative as a way to remind Americans that “every one counts.”

Red Nose Day was created in 2015 by the Comic Relief, a nonprofit organization, as a way to drive change through the power of entertainment. Since its inception, Red Nose Day has raised over $100 million and has impacted over eight million children in all 50 states across the country and in global communities.

Organizations that receive funding from the program include the Boys & Girls Club of America, Feeding America, Children’s Health Fund and others.

Red Nose Day will be celebrated May 24 on a national scale with a televised celebration starting at 8 p.m. (EST) on NBC.
