It is the season that just keeps on giving for the Cyclones.
Here recently, the Tennessee Sports Writers’ Association released its wrestling all-state teams and selected was Elizabethton’s Kilroy Hill( A-AA, 152 pounds) Chris Taylor (A-AA, 182 pounds), Haley Brown (A-AA, 170 pounds), Tyesha Thomas (A-AA, 112 pounds) and Shamia Wells (A-AA, 215 pounds).
“It just shows that this team is being recognized statewide,” said Elizabethton head boys’ wrestling coach Travis Pennell. “We are really proud of everyone that has been announced on the team.”
The postseason accolades come after all of the Cyclones’ all-state selectees medaled at the TSSAA state wrestling tournament.
Wells had the best performance as she took first place at 215 pounds. Brown and Thomas both finished second in their respective categories of 170 pounds and 112 pounds. On the boys’ side of the mat, Hill grappled to a third-place finish in the 160-pound division while Taylor took fourth at 182.
With Brown, who recently signed with Life University in Georgia, being the lone senior out of the five, the Cyclones are expecting to be just as tough next season.
“To have most of everyone comeback is awesome,” said Pennell. “For the guys’ team, we didn’t lose any seniors. It is just going to be a strong team.”
The Cyclones boy went 21-4 overall marking one of the best seasons in program history. The Elizabethton boys also finished 14th overall at state while the Lady Cyclones took a second-place finish at the state tournament
Pennell and Eddie Morrell, who is the head coach over the girls’ program, took over the wrestling teams this season.
“It is hard to describe,” said Pennell about his and Morrell’s first season over the program being so successful. “I have to give a lot of props to Eddie. Without him, I don’t know where we would be as a team. Where this program has been before has really given us great footing.”
