Sharon “Katie” Hammitt, 66, of Johnson City, passed away peacefully, surrounded by her loving family, on Sunday, April 15, 2018, at her residence. Katie was a native of Carter County and a daughter of Margaret Lee Hopson Hammitt and the late George Hammitt Jr. In addition to her father, she was preceded in death by an infant sister, Mary Lee Hammitt; her maternal grandparents, Tommie and Mary Hopson; her paternal grandmother, Eva Glover Hammitt; and several aunts and uncles.
Katie retired as a pharmacy tech and was a member of Milligan Freewill Baptist Church. She enjoyed Duke Basketball, cross-stitching and floral arrangement.
Those left to cherish her memory include her mother, Margaret Lee Hopson Hammitt, of the home; her sister, Shirlene Hammitt Sholes and husband Dillard M. Sholes III, Johnson City; a special niece, Dr. Paige L. Sholes, Johnson City; and two special friends, Rebecca Street, Roan Mountain, and Amy Hotelling, Unicoi. Several cousins also survive.
A service to celebrate the life of Sharon “Katie” Hammitt will be conducted at 7 p.m. Wednesday, April 18, in the Chapel of Peace at Tetrick Funeral Home, Elizabethton, with Rev. Mark Street officiating and Wes Barnett providing a eulogy. Music will be provided by Joel Street. The family will receive friends in the funeral home chapel from 5 until 7 p.m. Wednesday, prior to the service, or at the residence at any time. The committal and entombment service will be conducted at 11 a.m. Thursday, April 19, at Happy Valley Memorial Park, Mausoleum of Peace. Active pallbearers will be Wes Barnett, Sam Hopson, Jason Lloyd, Nathaniel Lloyd, Wayne Smith and J.L. Hammitt. Honorary pallbearers will be B. Cable, Dr. Karmen Paulson, Dr. Jane Jones, Curt Alexander, Kathy Thomason and William Young. Those wishing to attend the service are asked to meet at Tetrick Funeral Home, Elizabethton, at 10:15 a.m. Thursday to go in procession. The family would like to thank Dr. Jamal Maatouk, Myra Blankenship, FNP, and the entire staff of Wellmont Cancer Institute and Wellmont Hospice for the love and care shown to Katie and her family. Those who prefer memorials in lieu of flowers may make donations to Milligan Freewill Baptist Church, 1471 Milligan Highway, Johnson City, TN 37601.
