Hyder drops out of BOE race, state extends qualification deadline

A candidate’s withdrawal from the upcoming County General Election for the Carter County Board of Education has led to one district where no one is running for the seat on the Board.

“Steve Hyder withdrew, and that leaves an opening for the district,” Carter County Administrator of Elections Tracy Harris told the Elizabethton Star on Thursday afternoon.

Hyder had previously qualified as a candidate for the Carter County Board of Education seat representing District 7, which includes the Gap Creek and Westside Precincts. He currently serves as the Board member for District 7 was running unopposed in his re-election bid.

The deadline for candidates to qualify for the election was April 5. With Hyder’s withdrawal leaving no candidates for the 7th District seat, Harris worked with State Election Commission officials to get an extension on the deadline for candidate paperwork. Those seeking to become a candidate for that race will have until Noon on Thursday, April 19, to turn their paperwork in to the Carter County Election Commission.

“That’s just for the School Board District 7 seat,” Harris said.

To qualify as a candidate for the Carter County Board of Education, individuals must have a high school diploma, be a registered voter, and live in the 7th District. Candidates must obtain a petition from the Election Commission and return it with at least 25 signatures of registered voters from the 7th District.
