A Whole New World: Betsy Band to march at Disney World

In some cases, it is safe to say the Elizabethton High School Betsy Band can surely put on some “magical” performances.
That attitude carried by the students will be on full display this week as the band will participate in the Festival of Fantasy Parade at Disney World’s Magic in Orlando, Fla., on Friday, April 13.
An annual tradition, the event has become one of the highlights for students, according to Betsy Band Director Perry Elliott.
“This will be our 13th time participating in the parade,” Elliott told the Elizabethton Star Wednesday. “We were selected by the committee on our past credentials. There’s a process you have to go through before getting selected. The students are very excited for this trip and we’re looking forward to representing Elizabethton.”
According to the amusement park’s website, the parade through Magic Kingdom pays “homage to the unbridled magic and vivid pageantry of Fantasyland and its many inhabitants. The Disney Festival of Fantasy Parade is a thrilling sight-and-sound spectacular that winds its way through the streets of the Magic Kingdom park each afternoon.”
Dipping into the realm of fantasy, Elliott added the event is a dream trip for the students.
Making the dream become reality is nothing out of the ordinary for the Betsy Band. During the fall, the Cyclones were able to perform at Neyland Stadium during the University of Tennessee football team’s contest against UMass. Along with performing in the stands, the band also took to the field to perform during halftime.
EHS band members have a highly-touted track record of success over the past decade. In the span of eight years, the band was recognized for first place finishes in the Division II state championship competition. For the 2017-18 school year, the band finished runner-up to Adamsville Junior Senior High School, 94.50 to 95.35.
