A.B. “Cap” Hardin

A.B. “Cap” Hardin, 89, of Knoxville, passed away Wednesday, April 11, 2018. Born in Carter County, Tenn., he was a U.S. Navy serviceman, attended Milligan College, and graduated from East Tennessee State University. He was a salesman for Tri-State Container Corporation and Inland Container Corporation.
Cap was a loyal UT football fan and avid golfer, playing at Deane Hill and Fox Den Country Clubs. A long-time member of Second Presbyterian Church, he served as Sunday School teacher, Deacon, and Elder. He was active in the Tennessee Jaycees, Bearden Lions Club, and West Hills Community Association.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Andy Byrd and Ora C. Hardin; brother, Warren Hardin; sister, VerneIla Hayter; and grandson, William H. Mautz.
Survivors include his wife of 58 years, Clara Gowans Hardin; daughters and their husbands, Elizabeth and David Mautz, Paula and Steve Hines, Andrea and Doug Byerly, and son Tony Hardin and Jimmy McCoy; grandchildren, Richard and Emily Mautz, Charles and Brooke Mautz, Austin Byerly and Ashlyn Williams, Brian Byerly, Megan Hines, Emma Hines and Carter Hines; great-granddaughter, Lucy Mautz; and sister, Vee Shell, as well as numerous nieces and nephews.
Following a private burial, there will be a memorial service at Second Presbyterian Church on Saturday at 11 a.m. with Rev. Tim Reynolds officiating. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Second Presbyterian Church or the William H. Mautz Pediatric Cardiology Support Endowment at Duke Children’s Hospital.
