With the simple flick of a pencil, a handful of elementary students were able to give thanks to those that have given their all for their country.

The Disabled American Veterans Auxiliary (DAVA) Unit 17 of Elizabethton held an essay contest on Thursday, March 22, for Harold McCormick Elementary School students and recognized the winners.

According to information provided by DAVA Adjutant Becky Murray, students were able to write and illustrate their essays under the theme of “What I Love About America.” Throughout the contest, 63 entries were received with six being chosen for final prizes.

Fifth grader Peyton McGee came away with first place with her essay describing the reason of why she loved America. In her essay, she mentioned the importance of the country’s armed forces and added both of her grandfathers were soldiers that fought in Vietnam. McGee received a $50 gift card and first place ribbon.

Murray added there was a tie for second place with Aubrey Sparks and Ava George Wilber both receiving accolades and $30 gift cards. Grace Whaley received a $15 gift card and certificate for her third place essay while Caiden Treadway received the same award for his third place illustration that accompanied his essay.

Murray was quick to commend the efforts of all the students that participated in the event.

“All the students who entered were given participation certificates and thanked for their efforts,” she said. “The students did a wonderful job on their essays and picking the winner was a difficult task for the DAVA members.”

The adjutant also thanked the staff at HME for allowing the organization to hold the contest. Due to the overwhelming response, Murray added that the goal is to make this an annual event moving forward.

DAVA members from Elizabethton stay busy with various activities throughout the community by assisting local veterans and encouraging patriotism in the community.

“The goal is to help young people recognize and appreciate the sacrifices made by our veterans and their families and realize the privileges and rights we have because of the continuing dedication of the members of the United States military.”
