Spring is getting into full gear and citizens are feeling some of the pressure gas prices have brought to the table so far.

According to information provided by AAA, March gas prices were the highest on record since 2014 with the monthly average hitting $2.35 in the state.

Stephanie Milani, Tennessee public affairs director for AAA – The Auto Club Group, said the average in March rose 30 cents compared to last year’s numbers.

Even though numbers were higher compared to last year, they are down compared to the $3.26 total four years ago, according to information provided by AAA. Milani added that the state’s average was 20 cents below the nation’s average in march.

Prices did see a trend upward last week but started to plateau during the weekend. Different variables reportedly played a part in the increase.

“Strong demand, tightening supplies and record-high gasoline exports gave gas prices a boost this week,” Mark Jenkins, AAA spokesman, said in the April gas price brief offered by the organization.

AAA indicated that Sunday’s average of $2.46 was the highest since October, when prices were recovering from Hurricane Harvey.

Prices typically see a spike during this time of the year, Milani added. Different factors come into play during spring with the public going through spring breaks and other drives across the country.

“We’re always going to see volatility during the spring, and we’d be worried if we didn’t,” she said. “There are so many factors that come into play. One of the biggest reasons we’ve seen prices increase is due to high gasoline exports.”

Residents have a variety of tools available to stay up to date on gas prices. Along with their website, AAA has a mobile app for phones, tablets and computers that can be used to find out gas prices of local stations.
