A weekend two-car crash claimed the life of a Carter County teenager.
According to a report issued by Tennessee Highway Patrol, Brandi Thompson, 17, of Roan Mountain, passed away Sunday evening during a multi-car collision on US Highway 19-E in Hampton near the Simerly Creek exit.
In the emailed report provided by Sgt. Nathan Hall, a 1991 Honda, driven by 29-year-old Cory Mowdy of Kingsport, was traveling northbound on 19-E and crossed the centerline, striking the second vehicle — a 2003 Saturn with Thompson as a passenger — head-on causing severe damage to both cars.
Mowdy and an additional juvenile passenger from the Saturn were taken to a local hospital for injuries. The driver of the second vehicle did not receive medical treatment. No updates on the injured were provided to the Elizabethton Star’s press deadline.
Local emergency personnel assisted Tennessee Highway Patrol with the crash, which took place a little after 5:30 p.m. Sunday. Traffic was at a standstill for several hours into the night as personnel worked to clear the accident.
The report indicated that Thompson was not wearing a seatbelt and that the investigation is still ongoing. Criminal charges from the wreck are also pending.
