A partnership between the Carter County school system’s Transportation Department and a mobile shopping app company could help raise funds for county high schools.

Popular online store PromGirl has signed an advertising contract to have their company featured on four school buses in Carter County, one for each high school. As part of the agreement with the Transportation Department for each download of the PromGirl mobile phone app, the company will make a donation to the Carter County high school of the user’s choice.

“When it’s downloaded there is a place to put your school,” said Transportation Department Safety Coordinator Missy Ward. “Each time it’s downloaded the school will get $1.”

The PromGirl mobile app is free and available for iPhone and Android operating systems.

“It’s free to download,” Ward said. “You have to set up an account, which just means they take down your information, and then you pick your school.”

“It’s easy,” she added. “I did it in just a couple of minutes.”

And the best part, you don’t have to be a student to help your favorite school earn some cash.

“Anybody can download it,” Ward said. “It doesn’t have to be a student. It can be anyone and then you just pick your favorite school.”

While $1 for each download may not seem like much, Ward said a little bit could add up to a lot.

“You tell me a school that couldn’t use $200 or $500,” she said, adding this could be a quick and simple way for schools to raise money.

The PromGirl website and mobile shopping app feature a variety of prom, pageant, and special occasion dresses. Users can also shop for accessories such as shoes, purses, and jewelry through the app. Users can select their favorite looks and save or share them.

Ward said the company signed on for a three-month advertising campaign with the ads on the buses to get the word out about their mobile app and products during Prom season.
