While the threat of imminent weather led to the postponing of a unique fundraising event, thanks to some rescheduling the game is back on.

On Saturday, March 3, the TLC Community Center will present a game of Donkey Ball, and according to center Director Angie Odom it promises to be a night of fun for the whole family.

The game will serve as a fundraiser to help celebrate the Center’s 18th “birthday.”

Originally the game had been set for February 2 but was postponed due to inclement weather in the forecast.

“The company we use is in North Carolina and the weather was going to be too bad for them to be traveling,” Odom said.

The Donkey Ball game will take place at 7 p.m. on March 3 inside the gym at Hunter Elementary School.

In recent years, the TLC Community Center has hosted a Donkey Ball game as a way to raise money to support the Center’s many community outreach programs. Between the admission fees and concession sales at last year’s game the Center raised $2,400.

For those who may not know what a Donkey Ball game is, or who have never seen one in person, Odom said it is a spectacle like no other.

For a game of Donkey Ball, the players are paired with a donkey, which they must remain with during the game. Players can stand on the ground holding the reins to the donkey when they pass the ball back and forth, but to be able to score points, the player must make the shot while riding their donkey.

Part of the entertainment is watching the players struggle to get their donkeys into position. Much like the human players, Odom said the donkeys all have their own personalities and sometimes what they want to do and what their human partners want to do aren’t the same thing.

Two teams will compete to win the Donkey Ball game. Odom said the audience will be asked to help select the best player from each team for a special reward.

While the two-legged players are local, the four-legged team members are part of a special troupe from Professional Animal Frolics, which is based out of Boiling Springs, N.C. The donkeys are specially trained by the company to take part in the games according to information from Professional Animal Frolics.

During intermission, children in attendance will get the chance to take a ride on the donkeys.

Tickets are $7 for adults, $5 for children, and children age 3 and younger will be admitted for free. A variety of concessions will be available for purchase.
