A Roan Mountain woman faces an arson charge after police say she set fire to her boyfriend’s home on Monday.

Deputies of the Carter County Sheriff’s Office arrested Rebecca Anna Sue Clawson, 31, of 235 Perkins Hollow Road, Roan Mountain, on Monday and charged her with arson.

According to court documents, deputies of the CCSO responded to a report of a structure fire at a home located at 156 Jackson Avenue on Monday. When Deputy Nathaniel Swymer arrived at the scene, he spoke with the resident, Casey Reed, regarding what had happened.

“Mr. Reed stated that he had gone with his brother, Mr. Tracy Reed, to get food,” Swymer said. “Mr. Casey Reed stated that he left his girlfriend, Ms. Rebecca Clawson, in the home when they left for food.”

When the two men returned to the home, Tracy Reed tried to go inside but was overwhelmed by smoke, Swymer said.

“Mr. Tracy Reed stated when he went to cut the water off to the trailer he found Ms. Clawson hiding under the house,” Swymer said. “Mr. Tracy Reed stated that Ms. Clawson got out from under the trailer and walked up a trail into the woods.”

Swymer and CCSO Deputy Justin Johnson then followed a path into the woods, where they reported finding Clawson behind a dilapidated structure and brought her back to the home.

After members of the Hampton Volunteer Fire Department cleared the smoldering debris, Swymer said he suspected the fire might have been set deliberately, so he contacted CCSO Investigator Travis Ludlow to respond to the scene. Ludlow responded to the home to photograph the scene.

According to Swymer, Ludlow conducted a taped interview with Clawson regarding the incident, and she confessed to starting the fire. Officers then charged Clawson with arson and placed her into custody.

The home suffered some fire and smoke damage, according to officers, but the full extent of the damage is not yet known at this time.
