Hampton senior guard Dru Owens dropped 26 points including six three-ball’s but it wasn’t enough as Hampton fell 70-66 in overtime to Sullivan North in a conference contest. Owens helped the Bulldogs rally from a 41-32 deficit at the end of the third quarter, hitting five consecutive trey’s in the fourth quarter and overtime.

“The difference to me was on the glass,” Bulldogs head coach Ned Smith. “I thought we didn’t box out and they got a lot of second chance shots. Defensive wise we gave up a lot of layups, and I just thought Sullivan North wanted it more than we did.”

The Golden Raiders (8-7, 1-1) opened with a 16-10 first period lead with forward Matt Burk knocking down two triples while the ‘Dogs hit just one-of-eight from distance in the period. North continued to press the advantage into the second period with Bailey Burns hitting two trey’s but Hampton closed to 24-23 at the break with Jaydon Livingston leading the way with seven first half points.

Raiders guard Thomas Brown broke out in the third period with several steals and blanketing Owens defensively. Brown scored eight of his 15 points in the stanza as North extended to a 41-32 lead.

In the fourth period Owens eagle eye took over after a miss of his first trey, he then connected on the next three he attempted. His first trey gave Hampton a 49-48 lead with 2:56 left in regulation and after a deuce from Burns, Livingston connected on his second long range shot of the night.

Burns and Owens then traded bombs as Hampton (8-7, 1-1) led 55-53 with 1:36 remaining, but Blake Spradlin knotted the game at 55-55 with a deuce in the paint. A bucket from Brown gave the Raiders a slim lead but Owens connected once again for a 58-57 Bulldogs lead.

North’s Peyton Robinson had a chance to close out the win in regulation but he missed the second of his two free throws with 1.8 ticks left and the contest went into an extra stanza. Burk opened with a triple that was matched by Owens, but Robinson scored inside off an offensive rebound.

Owens gave the ‘Dogs their last lead of the game with his final trey at 64-63 but Burk’s free throw tied it once again. Brown and Owens exchanged free throws to make it a 66-66 game, but North Justin Cross (1-for-2), Brown (1-for-2) and Cross again (2-for-2) closed it out for the Raiders.
