Johnson County senior guard Bud Icenhour scored 20 of his game-high 30 points in the second half and overtime as he guided the Longhorns to an 80-72 overtime nonconference victory on Tuesday at Sonny Smith Gymnasium.
“To win here period, I don’t care how good a team you got, you feel fortunate,” Longhorns head coach Austin Atwood said. “We started to come back in the third quarter; I think they got up on us by 14 and we chipped away and grinded to the win. Bud, how many big shots did he hit tonight? I tell you Bud has to pick his scoring up, and he is an ultimate team player, but with Sean Lewis out we need him to score.”
Cloudland (8-4) looked to have this one in hand leading 34-27 at the half with post Josh Blair scoring 12 of his team-high 18 points in the first half. Blair hit three; trey’s with both Jacob Perrigoy and Hunter Shell each good for a long-range shot.
The ‘Landers extended to a 53-44 lead going into the final period, but Icenhour had begun to heat up with three triples in the third period. Zach Eller opened the fourth quarter with a deuce that was answered by Robert Leeper.
A pair of buckets in the paint from Jordan Eads cut the Cloudland lead to 55-50 at the 6:14 mark of the fourth period, and coach Atwood had words of praise for his effort saying, “Eads didn’t show up in the first half, but he sure did in the fourth quarter when we needed it.”
A three-point play by Blake Atwood made it a 58-57 at the 3:16 mark and Johnson County (10-5) took the lead on a pair of free throws from Nathan Arnold and a bucket from Eads, but Leeper answered for Cloudland.
Icenhour had a chance to ice this one in regulation with the ‘Horns leading 65-64 he made his first free throw but missed the second and the ‘Landers got the rebound and started down the court with 12.6 seconds left. A shot by Leeper from the corner missed, but Blair pounced on the rebound and delivered a deuce in the paint with just .08 left on the clock.
The ‘Horns dominated in overtime, scoring the first seven points with Icenhour burying another trey and Arnold and Atwood each knocking down baskets to give JC a 73-66 lead.
