What’s Happening This Weekend….

It’s going to be cold outside this weekend, so it might be a good time to stay inside, cook a pot of soup, and catch some football on television as it is New Year’s Weekend and bowl time! Also, it is a good time to catch some basketball as holiday tournaments are underway.
• LADY BUCCANEERS BASKETBALL tonight at 6 o’clock at Freedom Hall Civic Center as the Lady Bucs play the North Greenville Crusaders.
• RED HOT & BLUE REVUE this evening from 8 to 11 p.m. at Down Home, hosted by The Lightnin’ Charlie Show.
• NEW YEAR’S EVE GALA sponsored by Kari’s Heart Foundation Sunday from 7 p.m. to 1 a.m. at the Carnegie Hotel in Johnson City. Event will consist of compliment wine and hors d’oeuvres, followed by a gourmet meal, dancing to the music of the Johnson City Hit Men, a silent auction, complimentary champagne toast and more. Kari’s Heart Foundation (KHF) is a 501 (c) 3 charity that helps families of hospitalized children with traveling and miscellaneous expenses related to their healthcare crisis.
• FIRST DAY HIKE Monday at Roan Mountain State Park from 9 to 11 a.m. Join a Park Ranger for a winter morning hike along the frosty Doe River. Meet at Picnic Shelter 3 in the Campground. Hike will be approximately 1 mile out and 1 mile back along the Tom Gray Trail. Be prepared for cold, windy, and perhaps even snowy conditions as the average January temperature in Roan Mountain is 24 degrees! Following the hike, there will be hot chocolate at Picnic Shelter 3.
• FIRST DAY HIKE Monday on Buffalo Mountain from 1 to 2:30 p.m. A two-mile hike and a $2 charge. Meet below the service gate. For more information call 434-5821.
• 18TH ANNUAL WATAUGA LAKE SAILING CLUB FROSTBITE SAILBOAT RACE Monday. Twelve to 15 boats are expected to participate. The pursuit-format race will begin around 1 p.m. at the Lakeshore Marina Sailboat Dock, 1185 Highway 321, Hampton. Following the race, a potluck dinner with chili, soups and desserts will take place between 4 and 5 p.m.
